Next Level Crayons

Video demonstration using Neocolor II water soluable crayons by Caran D'Ache

Today, we’re talking about Neocolor II crayons! We’ll touch on my experience so far with them as a beginner, and I will share some artist profiles that may help inspire you as they do me. You can watch this video here of my first attempt at using the Neocolor II crayons.

Something extraordinary about creativity and art is that there are so many avenues and possibilities to venture into! It’s endless! And being someone who loves to “art” and loves trying new things, this does not bode well for my bank account. Nevertheless, the adventures must continue! Ha!

My recent adventure to the craft store left me with a 40-piece Neocolor II water-soluble crayon set. I have never used these crayons before but have seen other artist utilizing them as part of their craft, and I was inspired. I know what you are thinking, using “crayons” to make art; we’re not four years old! I thought you were classier than that Stephanie? No, I’m not, trust that I will happily finger-paint if the mood strikes! Hopefully, you would too! But, believe me, you would not want your toddler taking over these crayons especially after you see the price…

The Caran D’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble crayons are like a soft waxy crayon had a baby with creamy opaque gouache paints. I’ve only been using them for about two weeks, but they are so fun! You can use them like a traditional crayon to color or draw. But the magic happens when you add water to the colors. Wowza! Adding water to these once you’ve scribbled some color down is so satisfying. Every color is vibrant! It’s like candy for the eyes. As you sway your paintbrush over the crayon texture you laid down, you will start to get that beautiful dancing watercolor effect. It’s magic. That’s the only explanation.

Whether you're using them to draw, color, paint, or add to your mixed media arsenal, you won’t be disappointed with these Neocolor II crayons. I recommend starting with a smaller pack to ensure you love them first. And here's the good news: they're also sold as individual crayons. So, if there are only specific colors you'll use on a regular basis, you can purchase them individually and replenish them as needed. This way, you're in control of your investment and can focus on the colors you love most.
